Promising kidney disease cure to undergo first human trial in Australia

A drug that successfully prevented kidney disease in diabetic mice is set to undergo its first human trial in Australia.
More than 140 Australians suffering from Type-1 or Type-2 diabetes will participate in the study to be run by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Xinhua news agency reported.

A drug developed by researchers at Monash University that blocks a pathway through which NOX enzymes cause damage to the kidneys will be tested in the trial, which will begin in September.

Blocking the pathway in mice had prevented kidney damage and the drug has shown promise in repairing eye and heart damage related to diabetes, said Mark Cooper from Monash University.

The rights to the drug are owned by Swiss pharmaceutical company Genkyotex.

"In the diabetic kidney, three things happen: it scars, it gets inflamed, and it leaks the protein albumin," Cooper was quoted as saying by the Australian media on Wednesday.

"We were able to show this drug stopped the protein leaking, stopped the inflammation, and stopped the scarring. It's the scarring, particularly, that causes kidney failure," Cooper said.

The 142 study participants will have their urine tested for albumin and then be administered the NOX-inhibitor or a placebo for 12 months.

Kidney disease is one of the most common causes of death associated with diabetes.

"If we can slow down kidney disease, and also reduce heart and eye disease in the diabetes population, it will dramatically improve lifespan and quality of life," Cooper said.

"These people (sufferers of both type 1 and 2 diabetes) can avoid dialysis, have fewer heart attacks, and suffer less blindness," he added.

Cancer network offers new resources for rectal cancer patients

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network has published new resources, including guidelines for patients and a quick guide sheet for rectal cancer – in addition to resources for colon cancer from earlier this year – to help patients with rectal cancer make informed choices about their care, according to a press release.
With support from Fight Colorectal Cancer, patients will have access to easy-to-understand guidelines based on the same clinical evidence used by health care professionals to determine the best way to treat cancer patients, according to the release.

Each resource includes expert guidance from top cancer centers created to help people living with cancer understand and talk about their treatment options with health care providers, per the release. The NCCN Guidelines for Patients and NCCN Quick Guide sheets, one-page summaries of the main points in the patient guidelines, include questions to ask one’s physician, a glossary and medical illustrations of anatomy, tests, and treatment, according to the release.

“It is so important for patients and their families to have access to reliable, up-to-date and understandable information about their cancer to assist in composing questions and making decisions about their care when seeking guidance from their clinicians,”

Brain patterns linked to possibility of cardiovascular diseases, says study

The new research, the largest brain-imaging study of cardiovascular stress physiology to date, introduced a brain-based explanation of why stress might influence a person's heart health.

"Psychological stress can influence physical health and risk for , and there may be biological and brain-based explanations for this influence," said Peter Gianaros, Ph.D., the study's senior author and psychology professor at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.

To help understand the brain-body link between stress and health, researchers conducted mental stress tests and monitored and heart rates during an MRI procedure. The mental tests were designed to create a stressful experience by having research volunteers receive negative feedback while they were making time-pressured responses to computer challenges.

Research participants - 157 men and 153 women - were 30 to 51 years old and part of the Pittsburgh Imaging Project, an ongoing study of how the brain influences . As expected, the mental stress tests increased blood pressure and heart rate in most of the volunteers compared to a non-stress baseline period.

Using machine-learning, researchers determined that a specific brain activity pattern reliably predicted the size of the volunteers' blood pressure and heart rate reactions to the mental stress tests.
The brain areas that were especially predictive of stress-related cardiovascular reactions included those that determine whether information from the environment is threatening and that control the heart and vessels through the autonomic nervous system.

The study was based on a group of middle-aged healthy adults at low levels of risk for heart disease, so the findings may not be applicable to patients with existing heart disease. Also, brain imaging does not allow researchers to draw conclusions about causality.

"This kind of work is proof-of-concept, but it does suggest that, in the future, brain imaging might be a useful tool to identify people who are at risk for heart disease or who might be more or less suited for different kinds of interventions, specifically those that might be aimed at reducing levels of stress," Gianaros said. "It's the people who show the largest stress-related cardiovascular responses who are at the greatest risk for poor cardiovascular health and understanding the mechanisms for this may help to reduce their risk."

Now, more demand for eco-friendly idols in sarvajanik mandals

If some idol-makers of eco-friendly Ganpatis are to be believed, they have made a lot more eco-friendly idols for Sarvajanik mandals this year. And one of them is as high as 22 feet.

“I make both eco-friendly and plaster of Paris (POP) idols. This year, I made at twenty per cent more eco-friendly idols as compared to last year. As awareness is growing, people prefer eco-friendly idols. We too encourage people to buy eco-friendly Ganpatis,” said Yogesh Khamkar, an idol-maker from Tardeo
Khamkar added: “For Sarvajanik mandals, I have made one more eco-friendly idol this year, and have increased the height of another one. The smaller Sarvajanik idol is of around nine feet while the bigger ones is all 22 feet this year. This one in shadu mati is considered to be among the tallest.”

Sandeep Gajkosh, another idol-maker who makes eco-friendly Ganpatis out of paper, said he goes to the extent of using waste paper to add to the eco-friendly initiative.

“We do not use paper that has any print because they say ink is not good. So, we go to the printing press which have plane while paper. Their discarded paper is used by us. We make sure that we take care of the waste and use it for making Ganpatis,” said Gajkosh.

This year Gajkosh made a total of 50 eco-friendly Sarvajanik idols as compared to just over 10 last year. These ranged from eight inches for household to 15 feet for Sarvajanik.

That increasing numbers of Sarvajanik Ganpati mandals are opting for eco-friendly Ganpatis is a good sign. It shows that the message of celebrating the festival in an eco-friendly manner by bringing in eco-friendly idols that is being encouraged by DNA is seeping into the masses.

Masses reflect the mood of the city. That idol-makers are also encouraging people to take eco-friendly Ganpatis is a positive sign when city fathers are increasingly accused of taking actions that are detrimental to environment.

Swine flu alert

Time and again we hear the alarming news that certain deadly flu virus has been detected in our city too. While we immediately start taking a few safety measures like not eating out or wearing masks, many of us aren’t armed with the most basic information to be able to safeguard ourselves properly. What are the symptoms of the swine flu virus? Do masks, sanitizers, and vaccines help to prevent this disease? We, at The Week, caught up with Dr Pukar Thapa, general physician at Alka Hospital, Jawalakhel, to know more about this contagious viral flu and how we can make sure we don’t suffer from it.

What is the swine flu virus?
Swine flu is a comparatively new strain of influenza virus that may have symptoms similar to regular flu. This influenza virus primarily infects the respiratory tract of pigs causing nasal secretion, barking coughs, and appetite loss. Viruses of swine flu have the tendency to mutate or change and can be easily contagious, spreading from person to person. The outbreak of swine flu was first observed in 2009 in Mexico with the infection of H1N1 virus. This flu soon became a pandemic infecting many people all around the globe. This summer has once again brought many cases of swine flu in Kathmandu and we have to be careful not to catch it because the best way to deal with it is to prevent it. But a simple sneeze of an infected person can transmit the virus, so you have to be really careful.

What are some preventive measures that can be taken to avoid swine flu?
The intensity of swine flu may differ from person to person. A simple steam or home remedies may also kill the swine flu virus in some people whereas it will be completely ineffective for others. The best thing you can do if you have cold is to treat it immediately. Those who travel in public transports and go to public places must wear especially designed masks that prevent the virus from entering the human body. These masks are found in pharmacies all across the city. Avoid talking to people infected who seem to have a cold or are coughing and don’t shake hands with them either. One of the major ways to prevent the transmission of this disease is by constantly washing your hands. You can get rid of many germs this way. If there is a family member or a schoolmate with severe cold, he/she must be isolated immediately and taken to the hospital.
Can vaccines prevent this disease?

Gorakhpur hospital deaths: It’s high time we valued human life

The Gorakhpur tragedy was inevitably the subject of conversation and debate across the country. From a few I was privy to, the overriding conclusion seemed to be, `that world is some other country’s hell.’
This sense of detachment stems not so much from physical distance, rather psychological and emotional. In a way, this is expected given the size and diversity of the country. But therein also lies our failure at assimilation as a nation.
Urban India’s view of Uttar Pradesh (and Bihar too) is of some faraway dystopia. It is shaped by lack of knowledge about its people and reinforced by stereotyping: through popular cinema, and a media narrative that has got increasingly slanted in recent times. For most Indians elsewhere, UP (and Bihar) is full of bumpkins and bounders, goons and gangsters; where everyday life — like its politics — is ruled by various matrices of caste, community and religion.
Essentially, it is perceived as a dysfunctional state pulling the country down rather than one which needs to be uplifted by understanding the problems, concerns, safety and security of its people. Such a cock-eyed view ignores the human dimension, and imbues even a tragedy of the magnitude that hit BRD Medical College as a natural consequence rather than a colossal failure of the state administration.
Gorakhpur has long been identified as a backward area, particularly prone to Japanese encephalitis. While there is no magic wand the chief minister has to wish away the problem, it was nonetheless imperative for the local and state authorities to be watchful, if not battling the scourge on a war footing.
Worse, the horrific tragedy has sparked off a blame game in which lives lost and families destroyed have been reduced to statistics and the main issue sidelined — sadly even by mainstream media debating inane matters.
But cover-ups and excuses never wash for long. How much better if there was acceptance of failure, prompt and diligent investigation, accountability fixed and measures taken to prevent a repeat of such crisis?
In a broader perspective, the Gorakhpur tragedy is symptomatic of the callousness with which public health care functions in the country. And this is not restricted to backward areas alone as might be imagined.

Multicolour MRIs could help improve disease diagnosis: Study

A team of researchers have developed a method that could make magnetic resonance imaging - MRI - multicolour to help improve disease diagnosis.
The current MRI techniques rely on a single contrast agent which is injected into a patient's veins to vivify images.
The new method uses two at once, which could allow doctors to map multiple characteristics of a patient's internal organs in a single MRI. The strategy could serve as a research tool and even aid disease diagnosis.

Two contrast agents could include one specifically targetting diseased tissue, and one designed to show healthy tissue, for example. The new method would enable immediate comparisons of how each agent distributes in the same patient.

Flask said,"This multi-agent detection capability has the potential to transform molecular imaging, as it provides a critical translational pathway for studies in patients,"
In a study, the researchers described how two contrast agents, gadolinium and manganese, can be detected and independently quantified during MRIs.
The results provide "an adaptable, quantitative imaging framework to assess two MRI contrast agents simultaneously for a wide variety of imaging applications", the researchers said.
Flask said,"In this initial paper, we validated our new methodology, opening the possibility for numerous follow-on application studies in cancer, genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes."

Facebook's Colorful Balloons app isn't lighting up the Chinese market.

Facebook has finally found a way to get a foothold in the world's most popular country that has blocked it from re-entering since 2009. The simple answer is to secretly launch an app. The secret weapon is to launch it under a different name and unleash it upon the Chinese iOS App Store. Facebook released its photo-sharing app Colorful Balloons back in May.
The app has none of its own branding attached and Facebook has done nothing to promote the app. The only clue given is that it has the same icon as Facebook's Moments app and similar features.

"We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country in different ways,” Facebook said in a statement. It's been three months since but no one seemingly wants to have that app on their phone. The response was muted. This suggests that Facebook and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will be facing an uphill battle if they are to crack one of the strictest countries in terms of censorship.
The app basically collates your photos from the albums on your smartphone's and then lets you share them, with the use of a QR code. It is not available on the Google Play Store.

The company did its bit in adapting to a local audience. While Moments connects through Facebook, Colorful Balloons links through the popular social media mobile application WeChat.

What is Facebook's goal?

Facebook's short-term goal is learning about how apps become successful in China. The app gives Facebook an insight into how Chinese users share information with friends on the internet and how they interact with various social media platforms. China has more than 700 million internet users and they mostly use apps like Tencent's WeChat. Zuckerberg himself has made repeated attempts to get Chinese authorities on their side.
Zuckerberg has learnt Mandarin and even posted a photo of himself jogging right past Tiananmen Square. Facebook even went the full mile and developed a censorship tool that stops these 'sensitive posts' from appearing on news feeds in certain geographical locations in the hopes of entering China.

A breath of fresh air: Air-purifying houseplant anthurium

Plants are not just decorative -- many are natural air filters that work to clean up the indoor environment, absorbing irritating or harmful chemicals from the air. We find out more about two such plants.

Origins and specifications
Red anthuriums are also called “tongues of fire” because of their bright red, shiny, heart-shaped blossoms. This plant originates from South America. Its flowers may be red, pink, or white. Anthurium is a natural filter for ammonia and xylene. Beware, however: The plant’s sap and leaves may cause allergies in sensitive people.
Where to put it
Anthurium needs a lot of light but, as with many plants, it must avoid direct sunlight, and it needs dampness to develop and blossom. It should ideally be placed indoors, beside a window, at a temperature between 18°C and 21°C.
How to look after it
Anthurium requires a little attention: As it cannot bear dry air, you will have to spray a little water on the leaves during the winter. Likewise, it must be repotted each year in a pot with a hole in the bottom. As the plant ages, potting will only be necessary every other year. — AFP-Relaxnews

Origins and specifications: Ficus microcarpa comes from Asia. It is easily identifiable thanks to its small, oval, shiny and highly decorative leaves. It is often grown as a house plant, most often as a bonsai. Sometimes referred to as “ficus ginseng” – “ginseng” is Chinese for “root” – because of its splendid ramified aerial root which gives it a contemporary look, this ficus will dress up your interiors perfectly. This plant is both invigorating and juvenating, and it provides oxygen, so you can breathe easier at home.

Where to put it: Ficus microcarpa thrives at indoor temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. It dislikes drafts and will shed its leaves if exposed to too drastic a change in temperature.
How to look after it: Despite these precautions, ficus microcarpa is nicknamed “the beginner’s bonsai”. It only requires moderate watering, especially in the summertime, and potting every other year, and it will go on for years. It likes a little dampness, but make sure not to leave standing water in the saucer.

Eat Almonds Daily to Reduce Bad Cholesterol

Nutty, brown and full of energy and essential nutrients, almonds have long been one of the ingredients that are know for its power-packed health benefiting properties. Eat them raw, soaked or simply use them in salads, smoothies, shakes and even desserts, these nutty delights enhance the flavour of a dish and render the crunch quotient as well.

An ancient custom is to soak almonds overnight and have them every morning. This is known to shield the body from various ailments.

Adding more to the incredible properties of the nut, researchers from Penn State found that almonds may not only help boost levels of "good" or HDL cholesterol, but also improve the way it removes cholesterol from the body.
"There's a lot of research out there that shows a diet that includes almonds lowers low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. But not as much was known about how almonds affect HDL cholesterol, which is considered good cholesterol and helps lower your risk of heart disease," said Penny Kris-Etherton, author of the study.

The researchers wanted to see if almonds could not just increase the levels but also improve the function of HDL cholesterol, which works by gathering cholesterol from tissues, like the arteries, and helping to transport it out of the body.
Depending on how much cholesterol it has collected, HDL cholesterol is categorized into five "subpopulations," which range from the very small prebeta-1 to the larger, more mature alpha-1. The researchers hoped that eating almonds would result in more alpha-1 particles, which would signal improved HDL function.

The study is published in the Journal of Nutrition.

The science behind gene editing

Gene editing is getting fresh attention thanks to a successful lab experiment with human embryos. But for all the angst over possibly altering reproduction years from now, this technology already is used by scientists every day in fields ranging from agriculture to drug development.
New gene editing tools let scientists alter the DNA of living cells – from plants, animals, even humans – more precisely than ever before. Think of it as a biological cut-and-paste programme. A look at the science.

While scientists have long been able to find defective genes, fixing them has been so cumbersome that it's slowed development of genetic therapies. There are several gene editing methods, but a tool called CRISPR-Cas9 has sparked a boom in research as laboratories worldwide adopted it over the past five years because it's faster, cheaper, simple to use with minimal training and allows manipulation of multiple genes at the same time.

The fresh attention comes from research involving human embryos. In laboratory experiments, a team lead by Oregon researchers used CRISPR to successfully repair a heart-damaging gene in human embryos, marking a step toward one day being able to prevent inherited diseases from being passed on to the next generation. But there's wide agreement that more research is needed before ever testing the technique in pregnancy.
The biggest everyday use of CRISPR so far is to engineer animals with human-like disorders for basic research, such as learning how genes cause disease or influence development and what therapies might help.
But promising research, in labs and animals so far, also suggests gene editing might lead to treatments for such diseases as sickle cell, cancer, by altering cells and returning them to the body. Another project aims to one day grow transplantable human organs inside pigs.

Safety is a key question because gene editing isn't always precise enough; there's the possibility of accidentally cutting DNA that's similar to the real target. Researchers have improved precision in recent years, but out-of-body treatments like using cells as drugs get around the fear of fixing one problem only to spark another.

Altering genes in sperm, eggs or embryos can spread those changes to future generations, so-called ‘germline’ engineering. But it's ethically charged because future generations couldn't consent, any long-term negative effects might not become apparent for years, and there's concern about babies designed with enhanced traits rather than to prevent disease.

Where you live determines if, or what kind of, research can be performed on human embryos. Some countries, especially in Europe, ban germline research. Britain allows basic lab research only.
In the U.S., scientists can perform laboratory embryo research only with private funding, as the Oregon team did, not with federal taxpayer money.

Researchers also are using gene editing to hatch malaria-resistant mosquitoes, grow strains of algae that produce biofuels, improve crop growth, even make mushrooms that don't brown as quickly.

Saliva may help promote wound healing: Study

A compound in human saliva may promote wound healing by increasing the formation of blood vessels, an advance that could help design better approaches for treating injuries, scientists say.
Researchers examined the effects of salivary peptide histatin-1 on angiogenesis or blood vessel formation, which is critical to the efficiency of wound healing.
They found that histatin-1 promotes angiogenesis, as well as cell adhesion and migration.

Researchers conducted experiments at three levels: endothelial, or blood vessel-forming, cells in culture; chicken embryos as animal models; and saliva samples obtained from healthy donors.
Using these three models, histatin-1 and saliva were found to increase blood vessel formation.
Researchers are now taking the next step in this line of study by using these molecules to generate materials and implants to aid in wound healing.

Twitter Night Mode Coming To Desktop Website Soon

Twitter is finally bringing its Night Mode feature to its desktop website. The social networking company is reportedly in the process of testing out a darker UI for its website — a feature that it first introduced on its mobile app.
According to 9To5Google, Twitter’s Night Mode for its desktop website will not at all change the way the site works. Just like what this feature does to the Twitter app, the timeline on the desktop website will switch to a much darker shade, making it easy for the user’s eyes to view content while enjoying a late-night tweeting spree.
When Night Mode is switched on, all white UI elements on the screen will be transformed to dark gray. Other colors are also changed to fit the darker mood of the website. In effect, the entire website becomes easy on the eyes.

At present, Twitter is only enabling this feature to a select few. To check if you have access to Night Mode, you should click on your profile photo and then select the Night Mode tab (if present) at the bottom of the pop-up list. Doing so will activate the feature. For those who do not have access to Twitter’s desktop website Night Mode, they may view the screenshots here (courtesy of 9To5Google’s Joe Maring) to have a glimpse of the changes this feature does.

What makes online games like Blue Whale so addictive?

The Aerosol Challenge, a 2014 game, involved teenagers spraying themselves with deodorant at a distance of just a few inches from their skin, to see who could endure the pain the longest. It left some children with horrific burns.
In the Pass-out Challenge, young adults would choke themselves to the point of passing out in an attempt to reach an euphoric high—recording it all to post on social media.
The Fire Challenge saw people spraying themselves with flammable liquid and then setting it aflame, all for an online laugh. Neknominate had them drinking increasingly potent combinations of alcohol—this too led to some deaths. The Blue Whale game, the latest, sets tasks over a 50-day period, the last of which is jumping off a high-rise.
During Roman times, gladiatorial shows were a show of strength and violence. The Middle Ages turned execution into spectacle. Now, it’s online games like Blue Whale, says Shubha Madhusudhan, clinical psychologist, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru. “We have always had narcissistic personalities, sadists and psychopathic deviants in our society,” she says. The internet has just made it easier for all of them to connect with the vulnerable.
But what makes online gaming so addictive?
A spiral of challenges and achievements
Most games are addictive because of the challenge involved, says Mehul Shah, a 24-year-old gamer who can understand the need to complete tasks, even in an extreme game like Blue Whale. “There’s constant competition, ranking boards, level up, which drive you to be the best amongst others. Once you’re in it, there’s no coming back and you strive hard to achieve the next level, the next goal.”

Reliance Communications announces Rs 299 free data plan to take on Jio

RCom(Reliance Communications) has announced a Rs 299 rental plan to take on Jio. The news was given on Twitter by the company. The tweet does not reveal much about the plan except that it would offer unlimited texts, unlimited calls and unlimited data.
This is what it reads," Reliance Mobile introduces the lowest rates ever! Starting at Rs. 299 monthly rental." The move aims to take a direct shot at Jio that has spurred a tariff war by launching cheap data and free calls in the telecom market.

There is also a link to buy the plan. India Today Tech tried to purchase the plan by entering a Reliance number but it failed. Instead a message was flashed reading this," The amount entered is not eligible for this offer. Please dial *129# to check the valid amount for your Reliance Mobile Number." This means that there are chances that this plan is valid only for postpaid users as the number fed by us was a prepaid number.
Reliance Communications is run by Anil Ambani, the younger brother of Mukesh Ambani. The company recently reported a loss of Rs 948 crore for the Q4, 2017, mainly due to the free calls and data provided by Jio.

"The telecom sector in India has been very adversely impacted during 2016-17 by competitive intensity on a scale never witnessed before in the country," RCom had said in a statement.
It further noted that the sector has been "severely impacted" due to the  "free offers, disruptive pricing and hypercompetition" indirectly referring to Jio.
Reliance Communications recently also launched a Rs 147 plan data plan that offers 1GB data per day for 28 days. There is also a "Rozana offer" run by the company that provides 1GB data per day along with 30 minutes of talktime per day to any network at Rs 193. Like the Jio sachet packs, the company also a day plan for Rs 25 which will get users 1GB data for a day at Rs 25. For more data usage, users can consider the Rs 786 plan that offers 1GB data per day for 180 days at Rs 786.

Curiosity snaps fast-moving clouds in the Martian sky

Even robots exploring other planets need to take some time to unwind and just watch the clouds for a while. The Curiosity rover, which just last week celebrated its fifth anniversary on the Red Planet, has now sent back some of the clearest photos yet taken of extraterrestrial clouds.
The slideshows are made up of two sets of eight images, taken early in the morning of July 17. For the first set, the camera was pointed directly above the rover, while the second set of snaps captured the sky above the southern horizon.
To get the resulting level of clarity in the movement of the clouds, the images were enhanced by Curiosity's science team at York University. By generating an "average" of the light across all the frames of each group, and then subtracting the average from each individual frame, the changes in movement from one shot to the next could be emphasized.

Clouds may be an everyday occurrence here on Earth, but due to the elliptical orbit of Mars they're much more seasonal, forming a belt around the equator when the planet is at its furthest point from the Sun. Their presence two months before that happens means this is relatively early for the appearance of the cloud belt.
"It is likely that the clouds are composed of crystals of water ice that condense out onto dust grains where it is cold in the atmosphere," says John Moores, a scientist on the Curiosity team. "The wisps are created as those crystals fall and evaporate in patterns known as 'fall streaks' or 'mare's tails.' While the rover does not have a way to ascertain the altitude of these clouds, on Earth such clouds form at high altitude."

New drug created that may treat blood cancer patients

Experts say drug, called HXR9, prevents cancer cells from sidestepping apoptosis, the process that causes unhealthy, damaged cells to die.

Scientists have developed a new drug that strips cancer cells of their "immortality", and may treat patients suffering from one of the most aggressive forms of leukemia.
The drug, called HXR9, prevents cancer cells from sidestepping apoptosis - the process that causes unhealthy and damaged cells to die.
Researchers from University of Bradford in the UK found that it could be used to treat acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
The drug targets a particular family of genes, called HOX genes, which are involved in controlling the rapid growth of cells. In adults these are switched off but in cancer cells they can be turned back on.

This helps to give the cancer cells the ability to continuously grow and divide by circumventing the normal mechanisms that trigger apoptosis - effectively making them immortal, researchers said.
"Acute myeloid leukaemia is a pretty intractable disease and does not respond to many treatments. This is a novel therapeutic target that has not been shown before to be effective against this form of leukaemia," said Richard Morgan, from the University of Bradford.
Researchers analysed gene expression data from 269 AML patients and found an association between the activity of a group of HOX genes and the patient survival rate.
They then tested HXR9 on cancerous cells taken from patients suffering from AML and found it caused the cancer cells to undergo a process known as necroptosis.

Necroptosis causes the cells to explode and spew their contents into the bloodstream rather than simply digesting themselves as normally occurs in apoptosis.
This increases the likelihood that there will be a subsequent immune reaction against the cancer cells, according to Morgan.
The researchers found that when they combined HXR9 with another drug, a protein kinase C inhibitor called Ro31, it enhanced the reduction in cancer growth even further.
"It could well be used in combination treatments but the initial trials will be as a single therapy," Morgan said.
The study was published in the journal Oncotarget.

Amazon Pay Balance Can Now Be Used for Mobile Recharges

If it wasn't already clear, Amazon has big ambitions for its payments service, Amazon Pay. The company has added the ability to make mobile recharges, one of the most common use cases of any mobile wallet app, to its payments service in India.
At present in beta stage, users can now recharge their phone numbers using Amazon Pay, which also serves as a wallet service (also known as 'bucket'). Available on the Web as well as through Amazon India's app, Amazon Pay lets people store money in the service and also supports all the plastic cards and net banking option for payments. For now, it doesn't support mobile recharges for phone numbers on Airtel network, the website says.

The interest of Amazon in the payment space comes at a time when several major local players have been cashing in on the government's demonetization move. Amid demonetization, Paytm and MobiKwik, two large mobile wallet apps, reported skyrocketing growth in volume of transaction and new users.
The only other international giant which has so far attempted to serve Indians with their mobile payment solution is Samsung, which launched Samsung Pay last year. The company has partnered with several mobile wallet apps and banks to support their payments protocols on its service.
Going forward, Amazon Pay will also support UPI, a source familiar with the matter said. But for now, it appears Amazon is taking its time when it comes to new features roll-out.

ETHENOL :A tipple a day could lead to skin cancer, says study

You thought drinking after a hard day at work helped you relax? Think again. If a new study is to be believed, drinking just one glass of beer or wine a day could give you skin cancer.
According to the team lead by dermatologist Dr Eunyoung Cho of Brown University, any type of alcoholic beverage raises the likelihood of developing two forms of cancer. Every daily 10 gram shot increased participant’s risk of one type of skin cancer by 11 percent while the other was increased by seven percent.
The researchers claim that the chemicals released when alcohol is broken down by the boy are to be blamed.
